An advisor is akin to Mapquest, a Garmin or the Maps on a Smartphone; an advisor charts a path to a financial goal for a client, tells them how long it will take, and keeps them apprised of their arrival time.

An advisor's job is to guide the client to their end-goal. Just like a real trip to a far away event, the path, and the time to start, must be determined. And some cushion needs to be built into the trip in the event of unforeseen events causing delays. When a traffic accident or road conditions cause a traffic back-up, the advisor can tell the driver/client that he/she will still arrive in-time because they left earlier enough to have a cushion. The same holds true with the path to a financial goal: if the markets suffer a set back, if the advice was to start investing earlier, or with more money, or by using investments with higher potential returns, the "cushion" is built in to help ensure the end goal is reached.
